DENTON – The University of North Texas will begin selling beer on the concourse level of Apogee Stadium for all home

football games this fall, beginning with the home opener against SMU on Sept. 6.

North Texas joins a growing list of schools already selling beer in public areas at athletic events. SMU announced it will

follow last season’s basketball introduction with beer sales at Gerald J. Ford Stadium this football season, and will join

Texas, Texas Tech, UT Arlington, UT-El Paso, UT-San Antonio and Houston as state universities that currently serve beer

at designated athletic events.

“We carefully studied all issues related to making beer available in Apogee Stadium, and from every angle, it makes

sense,” said UNT President Neal Smatresk. “At UNLV, my experience was that selling beer helped to more carefully

regulate alcohol consumption and encouraged more fans to watch the game in the stadium. It also cumulatively improved

revenues and had no negative impact on the overall experience of all fans.”

The athletics department, university administration, the office of risk management and University police were all part

of the collaborative effort to develop a plan to create an environment that will not negatively affect the enjoyment of the

game for any fans. Beer will only be sold in controlled areas of the stadium, away from the designated family fun area

under the north end zone stands.

So... does that mean I actually do have to buy Thor a beer???

And FYI it looks like we still have corporate tailgating sponsorship for the fall.. new internationals, but the same ole drunks

I assume this comment was supposed to make me feel some kind of way.

Not really. Just pointing out the fact that the Greek system has supported UNT for years, much, much better than the official spirit organization. Yet you choose to sling arrows instead of fixing an organization where you are an alumni. Edited by UNTLifer

Going to be double fisting with a beer in one hand and a bottle of water in the other for the SMU game. Hoping it isn't the hottest day ever.

That's the Denton way, isn't it - require a membership to a club to drink?

That's hopefully changing for the better come November 4th.

So they want to sell liquor in Denton. Do they plan on setting up the first store on the doorsteps of Denia?

The thing that makes me most excited whenever I see a Spec's is the uncured applewood smoked bacon. Mmmmm... Bacon. Best I've ever had.

I do actually expect them to be the first to pursue a zoning, permit, or otherwise as soon as the law changes here - seeing as they're owned by UNT grads.

Why not do a kick off special?

Half price beer 20 minutes before kickoff should help encourage people to actually come inside the stadium and still have a long time before the end of the game to help alleviate drunk driving concerns...

Oh and of they will include one beer in the family four pack I will buy basketball season tickets right damn now.

Also, I would immediately re-up if they fire Benford.

Not a spec's fan. They try to sell you liquor they have special agreements with as if it is the best liquor EVAR! Only to realize they are simply pushing the liquor that they maximize profits off of. I like to try new things... but, i don't like wasting my money on something I was sold as great quality.

I stopped going to them after talking to many other stores, store managers, etc.

I'm not still bitter or anything.

Actually, no.

Pulling back the curtain to reveal the wizzard...

Its the "craft" arm of Coors. All the bigs are trying to get a chunk of the craft market by inventing micros. They all have them...Shock Top, Blue Moon, etc.

You really think that little brewery in Colorado could afford national ad campaigns.

The crazy part is that since Coors and Miller joined up, all of the Coors products that you are drinking (including Blue Moon) are being brewed at the Miller plant in FW. The one exception is the Banquet Beer, that is still brewed in Golden.

Nope. It is a Colorado brewery that specializes in Belgian style wheat beer. Much better tasting that the flavored water of Coors and Miller for sure.

I'd spend way too much money there.

This is completely OT but where did you find the logo in your avatar? That's seriously slick.

At first I liked it. A lot. Then I thought... "Hmm. Kind of like a DNA mix of an eagle and a moth".

It's the UNT Texas flag in the wings that does it for me. I hope this is an official logo somewhere. This is the first time I've seen it.

Searched "Mean Green logo." I don't know that it matters, but the default search engine at my office is Bing, so it might come up differently in Google.

Should have just said that I made it...

I just typed "bing.com" for the first time in my life. But I wasn't able to find it. Do you happen to know where it came from?
