A coach who knew what NT was when it was really a hard place to recruit to. Yet he won and never whined and had a burning desire to succeed. One of the few who have ever actively pursued the job. Thankful that he and wife Judy are both in UNT H of Fame. May he rest in peace and never be forgotten. He guided NT FB through its darkest hours yet had signature wins and three playoff appearances without a shadow of what MAC and crew have had lavished upon them.

I have fond memories of Corky. Gave me some of my favorite memories of NT football while he was here.

Specifically going 3-0* vs the SWC in 1988.

Prayers to the Nelson family.

I enjoyed knowing Corky and watching his teams play. I agree with GMoney that he was not perfect, but then who of us are?

I would've loved to see what he could've accomplished here without being a 1-aa school on the lowest of budgets. Of course, I bet he wishes he could've tried that, too!!

RIP, Coach!!

I rode down the elevator with Corky at the team hotel in 1988 in Austin before the Texas game. He told me he thought NT would beat Texas. Having seen the tape several times since, I think he was right.

Thanks Coach. "I hear ya."

He accomplished remarkable things at North Texas, especially given the circumstances at the time. He was before my time, but his teams must have been a blast to watch.

Yes, winning is fun to watch, especially against the right teams.

Corky had an overall losing record but had a couple of 2-9 seasons early that skewed the overall record.

Thought that was a nice moment for the show....and it sounded like DM was on the verge when George passed it to Coach.

The picture the DRC used of Coach Nelson on the shoulders of his players is somewhat iconic for NT fans of the era: A shot of a winning coach basking in the glory of a conference championship with his players, on our field in front of what appears to be a full section of fans celebrating with him.

Reminds me of January 1, 2014.

An inspiring coach who loved overcoming the odds. Gave us some our most exciting wins. He will be missed.

God bless, and ..."I Hear Ya!"

Rick
