North Texas head coach Johnny Jones has accepted the head coaching job at LSU, a source close to the situation said Friday afternoon.

Jones met with his team at about 6 p.m. on Friday to tell them that he is leaving UNT.

Jones played at LSU and spent 13 years at the school as an assistant coach.

He interviewed for the position the last time it was open back in the spring of 2008, before Trent Johnson was hired.

Jones will replace Johnson.

Jones spent 11 seasons at UNT and revived the Mean Green's program. UNT won at least 18 games in six straight seasons and went to the NCAA tournament twice in that span - 2007 and 2010.

UNT won just 20 games in the four seasons combined before Jones arrived at UNT.

5 years ago, who would have ever thought our two basketball coaches would be hired away by UT of the Big XII and LSU of the SEC? Typical of North Texas coaches, they will both get to face the defending National Champions not once but twice next year.
