SMU QB Neal Burcham will not play in this years UNT game.
As a Mean Green fan that could be bad news. Burcham was not the most mobile QB UNT faced last season and that combined with a pretty shoddy o-line and game planning by former head coach June Jones let UNT's defense really tee up in a 43-6 whipping. Evidently Burcham injured his shoulder enough to keep him out this entire season due to surgery.
New HC Chad Morris seems to have things headed in the right direction and right now it appears his QB will be Texas A&M transfer Matt Davis. UNT saw a little of Davis in last years game, although he clearly carried a dumbed-down playbook and frankly seemed lost at times. He only completed one pass and seemed to be running for his life most of the time he was in there.
Mark my words, Davis will be a better player this year. He has really good speed and a pretty decent arm. With a spring and summer under his belt he should know the playbook. UNT has not fared very well against dual threat quarterbacks in the last couple of years. Eric Sosa at UTSA comes to immediate mind. Containing Davis will be no easy task.
Another name to keep in mind is true freshman Ben Hicks (6-2, 197) who Morris signed out of Waco. Hicks will be green, but is one of the highest ranked prospects SMU has signed at the QB position in some time as he was an Elite 11 nominee in high school.
