I don't want to come off as exaggerant, but I believe this is the most important hire in the history of UNT athletics. I hope Jared knew what he was doing. -

100%. The NIT has been largely competitive. The NCAAT hasn't been. From the S16 to F4 there were 4 competitive games. 8 of those games were decided by 7 or more points. 6 were 10+ point beatings. The TV people will love this year's tournament. Fans, not so much. Very chalky and noncompetitive.

Everything I read suggests this guy is both a tireless and successful recruiter. In the Age of Annual Rebuild, that is vital. This guy sounds like a very good fit. -
Uh....no. We're still 24-12, 7-5 in league play. Coach Delong is by far, the best thing to ever happen to NT Softball. So, no.

None of us have a clue how this will turn out, but I am pretty happy with this hire. Glad we got someone with experience running a relatively successful mid-major program in the current transfer happy climate. -

I looked online and was also reminded that Rice football won an outright conference championship (CUSA) in 2008. Not bad! I don't think their basketball teams have won much of anything as long as I can remember though.

Might want to put the new boss' name.

I'm not sure kids went out of state to win as much as they went out of state to places that cared. At many/most Texas localities, they don't even really get into basketball season until football season is over. Not just college football, but pro too! Why stay in Texas when you could goto Kansas or whatever, and be the big man on campus?
-
But is a final four consisting of all the 1-seeds really any better? This tournament honestly kinda sucked this season. I’ve preferred the NIT games a lot more, but maybe that’s just me.

https://meangreensports.com/news/2025/3/30/mens-golf-mean-green-hosting-maridoe-intercollegiate Looking for a solid outing this week at our home course. Let's go low and take home some hardware against some of the top teams in college golf! GMG

For sure…that’s a long list of great players. I think that also played into wanting Texas teams to win to show kids they didn’t have to go out of state to win. This is a moot point nowadays. I couldn’t tell you how many TT of UH players are from Texas.

Already ready to renew season tickets. Let’s get it -
A whole lot of the best Texan kids also went and played out of state at your blue blood type programs that took basketball more seriously.

"During his first stint at Iowa State with head coach Greg McDermott, Robinson was responsible for recruiting players from Chicago and junior colleges.[23] He continued recruiting from those areas in his second stint with Iowa State.[29][30][31] Robinson became known for his recruiting ability." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniyal_Robinson

I think part of it stems from when Texas colleges generally had players from Texas high schools. As Texans, we wanted to see other Texans be successful. Just a state pride thing.

An interesting tidbit on Coach Robinson, he was retained as an Asst coach at IASt by Coach Otzelberger. That is a huge green flag since most longtime assistants of the previous regime are usually let go. Coach Prohm probably would’ve loved to have him @ MurrySt, but I bet the Asst coach pay is better in Ames. He took over @CSU the following year.
-
I don't know what all other directions this process might have gone, but I was concerned it would go much worse than this one. He could be very successful here.

Dennis Gates only Head Coaching experience was at Cleveland State and his record over 3 years was 50-40(.556). He was subsequently hired as Head Coach by Missouri. Daniyal Robinson, the next Coach at Cleveland State, has only had Head Coaching experience there and in 3 years his record was 65-42 (.607). What does SEC play being different from Horizon play have to do with those facts?
-
Sooo...by that logic, we spend less on a coach to spend more on players, yet that coach that you paid less wouldn't be able to spend that money wisely. Not sure I agree with that logic.
